While practically every day is IPA Day in my home, tomorrow is the third annual actual IPA Day; a movement dedicated to celebrating the unquestioned awesome which is a fresh, hop-juice filled IPA. That sweet, sticky-icky resinous, pine-juice that engages your entire mouth in a taste sensation of liquid heaven.
A Server by Any Other Name is Not a Kaleidescape

Last week Kaleidescape introduced a new product, the Cinema One, that I and many others in the industry – Residential Systems, CE Pro, Home Theater, Digital Trends, Engadget, USA Today – felt was pretty big news. (You can read my post on the Cinema One here.) For a company known for making systems for the luxury market c...

Demonstrate a Kaleidescape system to 100 people and I bet you’ll have 100 people that would love to own one. With its world-class user interface, near instantaneous access to a vast library of DVDs, Blu-rays and CDs, automatic bookmarking of the most iconic scenes in thousands of films, and the world’s only way to download and own movies in exact Blu-ray quality, Kaleidescape systems are one of the easiest products to get people excited about. I use Kaleiedescape as...

A couple of months ago, Source Interlink Media purchased Sound & Vision magazine. This probably meant next to nothing to most of you, but was actually fairly dramatic news within the A/V publishing industry because Source Interlink Media also happens to own another enthusiast pub known as Home Theater.
At the time of the sale, many people – myself included – speculated that there was just no way that they wou...

I have been accused, perhaps even fairly so, of being an IPA snob. Someone even told me that I should learn to appreciate other beers, that I need to broaden my horizons to embrace real beer, dark beer.
To these people I say, “Suck it!” I likes what I likes! And also, if by "snob" you mean I believe that other beers are inherently inferior to DIPAs for any one of a variety of reasons, including real or supposed, then, ...

Answer: “Just one. But it takes several hours to first research the bulb type and load, compare it to the list of approved bulbs, replace and reprogram the new dimmer and then change the bulb.”
That joke would be funny if it wasn’t so painfully true. Because if you’ve been in this business for any amount of time and you’ve ever installed a lighting control system then you have received or will r...

If your name is Cashworth Von Moneybottoms, there’s a ton of cool stuff you can do at your house just by whipping out your Centurion Card and flinging money at people like a feces hurling primate.
Want to recreate the 18th green at Augusta so you can practice your own, “UNBELIEVABLE! HE ROLLED IT IN TO CLAIM HIS FIFTH GREEN JACKET!” moment? Done. Want to dig a massive swimming pool in your back yard and then turn it int...

“Dress for the job you want.” – Your High School Guidance Counselor
“Dress for the clients you want.” – Me
Sometimes it seems like many members of our industry have co-opted the title “installer” as a license to wear any manner of “edgy” clothing. I remember walking the halls of my first CEDIA and I was shocked at how many people were...

I’ve been remiss in posting beer reviews with the vigor that I previously had. I fear that some of you might misinterpret this as the fact that I have cut back on my beer consumption, and I want to allay that fallacy right now with a quickness. I assure you; I am drinking just as much beer as ever. And am cataloging my reviews. It’s just the posting that I’ve become a little lax in. In fact, I have about 30 beers that have been opened, photographed, swilled an...

Last week, I traded some tweets with a friend that was looking for some advice prior to buying a new laptop. Instead of just saying, “Buy a Mac! They’re the best!” like everyone told me when I asked for laptop advice (for the record, I bought a Sony VAIO. No regrets. YOLO, right?), I suggested that she check out The Wirecutter’s best laptop research.
