Hanging With Bad-Ass Betsey Banker
Posted on May 2, 2014 at 6:35 PM |

There are PR people. There are *cool* PR people. And then there is Betsey Banker.
Betsey handles the PR and marketing chores for Ergotron and OmniMount, companies that manufacture the really sexy stuff of the technology world like projector and flat panel TV wall mounts and standing desks. If you want a mount that can go flat to the wall, tilt, swivel or even – I kid you not! – raise up and down, OmniMount has a solution for y...

I don’t usually pass on the many PR pitches that I get as I figure I can spare you from all of the “COME VIEW OUR WEBINAR!” and “BEST DVR SURVEILLANCE TECHNOLOGY!” and “It looks like a modern baseball cap, with a light-weighed rig that can carry any commercially available smartphone... It may look f, but it works nicely, and it’s very comfortable to wear” junk that I get on a near-daily basis.
Best/Worst Pitch Ever!

A friend forwarded an e-mail to me earlier today that was just too full of awesome not to share.
An email which caused audio/video journalist extraordinaire, Brent Butterworth, to say, “I've seen a lot of really bad unsolicited articles in my time, but this rises to a new level of bad.”
Sometimes the Customer is Just Plain WRONG!

We’ve all heard the old adage, “The customer is always right.” That no matter what they want, no matter what they demand, no matter how outrageous, off-mark or bizarre the request, that the customer is still right. (There’s a classic tale of Nordstrom’s – an upscale clothing/department store refunding a customer’s purchase for tires.)

Long time readers may recall our rather unceremonious parting of the ways with They Who Shall Not Be Named. Well, part of the fall-out of said ways parting was that we were left with quite a bit of inventory for which we were no longer a dealer. We’ve decided to get proactive in trying to clear out this old gear and have been advertising it on ...

I made some comment on Twitter a little while back about finding the closest replacement to my most beloved candy bar, the Bar None. For those of you who remember this bar it was utter perfection molded into a dark chocolate rectangle. It was chocolate crème filled chocolate wafers covered in chocolate and then topped with peanuts and then the whole thing was slathered in more rich chocolate. The bar had firmness and texture and flavor that was just…well, let’s...

My sister-in-law, Keely, is the master of all things pop culture and Internets related. There is never anything that I’ve seen/shared in which she hasn’t already seen it, seen the parody of it, and then seen other things even better than it.
I previously wrote this about Keely: "One of the real benefits of living in a home with no cable TV -- like my sister-in-law, Keely -- is that you have a lot of extra time for other thing...

“A meme (meem) is ‘an idea, behavior or style that spreads from person to person within a culture.’ A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena. An Internet meme is an idea that is propagated through the World Wide Web. The idea may take the form of a hyperlink, video, picture, website, hashtag, or just a word...

This is a story of social media marketing done to The Awesome. Taking a TV ad campaign and breathing life in it in the social world to create a skillet filled with forged liquid brilliance!
It’s been exactly a year and 13,700-ish posts since I joined Twitter as @SciaccaTweets. And, I must say, as giveaways go, Twitter has been ...

There comes a point in every person’s life when they are forced to do some real self-examining, soul searching. Where you say, “Just what sort of person am I? How would I respond to getting hit in the face with a highly polished piece of strengthened aluminum?”
As I told you before, I don’t often go into my day job thinking, “Hmm.

As a writer you hope that you can make some kind of connection with the people that read your work. This is especially true when writing a blog where you share all manner of personal things and give readers a glimpse behind the curtain which is my daily life. (Because, frankly, if you don’t like the blog, you really couldn’t like me. We are one and the same.) For readers that continue to return, I hope to be able to create some kind of reader-writer connection that ...

There is a special relationship that exists between hero and nemesis; between archetype and foil; between Holmes and Moriarty. Or, rather in this case, between Sciacca and Wilkinson.
If you’ve read any of my blog over the past 500 entries, chances are you’ve at some point stumbled across mentions of Herr Wilkinson, or perhaps just use of his Christian name, Darryl, or even the informal-est of all, “DW.” In fact, s...

If you’ve been stealing darkness for all of these years, just closing your eyes and basking and focusing in that cool, refreshing blackness, there’s a new company that wants to put a stop – and a price – to that. First, you’ve been doing it all wrong. Second, you just show me where it says that “darkness” is one of your inalienable rights, and I’ll show you a company that says, “We’re from the Netherlands! We don’...

You’ll recall my recent travel exploits from DC to Myrtle and Myrtle to Portland within a span of about 12 hours back in late Feb. Well, you could have surmised that with 5 plane flights in such a hyper-concentrated time period – bolstered with an equal amount of The Glen Livet served with a smile in the front of the plane – that there was bound to be some serious...

Now, I’m not a vegetarian or any special animal rights activist. I like to eat meat. You want to take me to a Ruth’s Chris, I’m gonna order a medium-rare steak. And I’m gonna love it. But that doesn’t mean I want to know how the meat gets to my sizzling 500-degree plate. I don’t want to visit a slaughterhouse or a rendering factory. I don’t want to watch some horrible Food, Inc. video where they show animals being sledgehammered in the ...

The particular part of the country that I live in is often referred to as “The Bible Belt.” And living in the Bible Belt, there are no shortage of churches. I haven’t kept an exact count – plus new ones are being added all the time – but I pass literally *dozens* on my to and from work. In fact, I pretty much pass dozens on my way to and from anywhere. While we have couple of large ones – though none of them are the mega-opolis types w...

Occasionally I like to let you into my little world of analytics and share interesting digital breadcrumbs and tidbits that I uncover. Recently someone found my site from Wikipedia after I was added as a reference. (I’d like to add that I am also here for all of your term paper and doctoral thesis reference needs. Seriously, cite me for something. It’d be awesome!) Then there are all of the people that find me from searching about silenced weapons or 3D being ...

First off, let me say that Jeremy Burkhardt is insanely successful. He’s been a custom installer, risen to the ranks of President of SpeakerCraft, one of the largest and most successful audio distribution companies around, sits on all kinds of CEDIA boards, has incredibly business sense, and has an amazing sense and vision for this industry. Also, he puts on the hands-down best press events at CEDIA. Whether that is free iPod giveaways, retro Command and Conquer stylized ...

Most people would view AOL’s spam filter as a cruel, cruel joke whose sole mission in life is to expose them to all manner of Internet phishery and digital flotsam and jetsam. It’s a filter in the way that a poplin jacket is bullet proof. Or in the way that diet soda really tastes like regular soda. Or in the way that when someone says, "Oh no! It's totally NOT a pyramid scheme! Not at all!" its really not pyramid scheme. Or when a telemarketer says they are ...
