Who Salted My Game?

Posted on November 10, 2010 at 11:41 AM Comments comments (0)

Big jobs are tough enough to come by these days, so when that supposed “sure thing” falls into your lap, it is a thrilling, soul-lifting, self-high-five-giving experience.

Last week I had what I thought was the closest thing to a locket in my pocket. A builder that we have done many large projects with called us. He was building a new house; a fairly big, single story 9,000 square footer right on the int...

Demo'ing a Projector Old School

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 5:47 PM Comments comments (1)

I did a major car trash clean-up the other day, and I stumbled across a dusty OLD binder in my trunk. It was left over from the last time that I had to go and perform a Runco CRT calibration and it contained all of my notes for dialing knobs, turning switches, bullying phosphors and making a 3-lens RGB projection system look as good as I could.

So, I pulled the binder out and instead of just chucking it into the tra...

Best Of: Volume 3 - The April '10 Years

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 3:09 PM Comments comments (0)

Here’s another round of previous e-blast mails sent to my members. If YOU want to be included in the e-blasting – which is quite a bit less painful than it sounds – join up! It just takes a second and membership is still free while supplies last! Like to see if I can get up to 100 before the end of the year...

These messages are from April 9 and April 26 when I had catapulted to 51 members. Links t...

Wilkinson blog: We cross sabres again!

Posted on November 8, 2010 at 11:55 AM Comments comments (2)

Now, I've been chiding fellow technology journalist, Darryl Wilkinson, about lots of things. But really, I kid because I love. And begrudgingly respect. And Darryl seems more than able to take it along with dishing-out buffet-sized heapings Darryl has been sending me fairly frequent text messages about the "beautiful people status at Panerai." Darryl visits Panerai so often that he is either a major shareholder, or fighting -- and losing -- some ...

Toy Story 3: Why I love my home theater!

Posted on November 8, 2010 at 11:16 AM Comments comments (1)

Back in June, Dana and I saw Toy Story 3 in the theater. This was going to be Lauryn’s commercial theater cotillion, but she was unsold on the whole 3D glasses experience. I believe her exact comments were, “!” followed by some crying and backin...

Can a drink help save the planet?

Straying off-topic a bit here... But my partner and I were talking today about this and that and the other and somehow we got onto the topic of the cardboard heat shield thingy surround his paper cup of coffee. Which he soon finished and stacked next to the other 4 cups on his desk. Whose ultimate end-journey in life will be to get thrown into the trash. (And hopefully before the ants come.) And how much waste is generated by all of these heat shield thingies &#...

Control4: Don't Anybody Panic!

Posted on November 5, 2010 at 1:17 PM Comments comments (2)

If you’re a Control4 dealer – as I am – you received an e-mail yesterday from Glen Mella, company President and COO, entitled ominously enough “A Letter from the Control4 COO.” Not often is a missive sent from so far up the mountain, so I opened it up and started reading.

And, I must say after a few lines in, my first reaction was: Panic!...

Battle: Text Color!

Some people... OK. It's one person. OK, it's Kim Lancaster from Caster Communications.

So, Kim Lancaster has suggested repeatedly, time-and-time again that my site is too difficult to read. Now, granted Kim is old and infirm and barely able to get out of a non-motorized lifting chair (I kid...Kim is young and spry and able to bound out of most chairs, or at least have her well-automated home do something for her) and has eyes that have been worn down and withered from years ...

And got Auto Tuned

Sometimes SNL is lame. An hour-and-a-half of jokes drenched in weak sauce and embarrassment just proving that just because someone is a famous actor, singer, sports star, random reality show celebrity or whatever that they can't do live TV. And they can't be funny. And when it's bad, it's painful bad.

But then, other times, when SNL is good. And when it's good, SNL is frickin' brilliant! This last week with Jon Hamm, was one of those shows. Hamm was on a year ago and b...

Great Music AND a Free Trip? Olive it!

Remember those crazy deals that you’d hear about back in the Reagan-licious ‘80s where European countries were apparently so starving for the US Green that they would practically PAY you to come over and pick up a car. “Ja! We have terrific car deal! You buy car, we fly you to Deutschland. We put you up in fine-quality hotel in Deutschland. We make sure you have ample portion of sausage servings for dinner UND breakfast! We bring you to factory. You tour factory. You help Ha...

Pronto, I come to praise, not to bury

Posted on November 3, 2010 at 10:52 AM Comments comments (0)

Philips recently announced that it is closing the doors on its Pronto remote control division. Distributors will be able to place orders through the end of November – or until inventory runs out – and Philips will honor all of its warranty obligations and Pronto remote will certainly continue to exist in the marketplace for a while amongst loyal integrators and programmers, but for all practical purposes, the Pronto remote control is dead. And instead of heaping dirt onto its grav...

While I try my best to love people of all neck colors -- love all, serve all, just like the House of Blues says -- sometimes those with the necks of the reddest-red can be difficult to, um, love. (And I’m not talking about Native Americans. My experience with them walking into our store is shockingly limited. And I was more than happy with my time on the Res...)

It was one year ago today...

Posted on November 1, 2010 at 2:27 PM Comments comments (2)

What a difference a year makes! At this time last year – literally at THIS exact time – I was down in St. John, the US Virgin Islands, completing an installation. A customer of ours decided to do a fairly major build on their property down there, and since they were containering in ALL of their new furniture, they decided to buy ALL of their A/V gear – TVs, speakers, Blu-rays, surround gear, remotes, etc. – from me to have shipped down. And then because I told them I w...

You've been John'd!

Posted on November 1, 2010 at 1:15 PM Comments comments (0)

At some point amongst the installers at Custom Theater my name has become a verb. And not in a cool, “I get my thing in action (VERB!) That’s what’s happenin’!” kind of way. But more in a downhearted, “I can’t believe this is happening to me again. I mean...damn!” kind of way. I thought I would explain the etymology of this new word.

John’d [Jond]
