Oscars finishes with a whimper

Posted on March 8, 2010 at 9:44 AM

Like many of you, I watched the Academy Awards show last night. (And so did NY and NJ----about 15 minutes into it thanks to a last minute deal reached between Disney and Cablevision.) I liked the banter between Martin and Baldwin, and if you've been a longtime SNL viewer, you'll know they have somewhat of a friendly rivalry/comraderie which I thought came across.

For me, it was the show's ending that was such a major fizzle. The entire 3 1/2 4 hour show builds up to what is supposed to be the evening's highlight: Best Picture. Would Avatar, the highest grossing film of all time, beat Hurt Locker, a film by Cameron's ex-wife? Or would it be one of the other 8 films nominated?

But instead of ANY suspense or build-up or even a recap of which films were nominated -- I couldn't even name all 10 films. Can you? -- what did happen was Tom Hanks rushing out onto the stage, giving a terse, "And the winner for best picture is..." ripping open the envelope, and saying "Hurt Locker" and that was it. Done and done in literally less than 10 seconds. Super anti-climatic. Tom, were you pissed because you weren't up for anything this year? Was the show running SO overtime it couldn't spare even a single minute to recap the 10 nominees? Did your limo rental expire at midnight? And what was with the horror montage segment? Were they just looking for any reason to get the Twilight actors involved? Discuss.....
